Hello everyone.
Lets get right down to it.
Anchoring.
...Wait, what's that? What in the world is anchoring you say?
No, we're not on the Northwestern crab fishing, we're talking guitar here!
Anchoring is when you rest your wrist/hand/etc on the guitar when not using those particular fingers, for example.
Lets say you're playing the high E-B-G strings. Now if when you pick those strings, you find yourself laying your hand/wrist down on the bridge, but you're not palm muting, you're Anchoring.
Generally you can find it that you have better accuracy when you're anchoring, and that you have better control. Doesn't sound that bad of a thing, does it?
Well, it is. Although it may not seem it, you can actually get much better accuracy and control if you don't anchor. Does this mean that anyone who anchors can't be good at guitar?
Of course it doesn't! Even players like MAB do it, and you may argue that anchoring never slowed them down. However, consider this. Have you ever heard any proffesional guitarist who anchors talk about how that's helped them in any way? I doubt it.
Now, lets say that you have large hands and long arms, like someone you may have heard of, and if you don't anchor, it's really uncomfortable playing. Does this mean that you can't play the guitar properly? Again, of course it doesn't! You can be an amazing guitarist even if you anchor, it just won't help any. So if that presents a problem, don't get discouraged, you'll be fine.
For now I'm leaving this unlocked to get people's opinions on the issue. I already know a few site members anchor and they say it works fine for them, which there's nothing wrong with that at all.
